The victim Rohima Khatun (not real name), 27, is the wife of Md. Rofique living in Shed No. 3, Block- G of Kutupalong refugee camp.
The rapist Bokter, a member of village union (40) belongs to Khoso Bonia village of Ukhiya union in Cox's Bazaar district. He owns a market near the refugee camp. He gets many contracts in the refugee camp to build sheds, latrines, tube-wells among other construction work. Thus, he has influence over the refugees and local authorities. Taking advantage of this, he has harmed many women in the refugee camp. He is said to be notorious. Refugees had complained to the authorities about his previous crimes, but no action was taken, another Majee said.
Md. Rofique, the husband of the victim works in a shop owned by Bokter. On August 8, at about midnight, the member of village union, Bokter entered the shed of Rohima Khatun and raped her. The victim screamed for help and refugees came to the spot and caught the culprit, he added.
He was handed over to the camp authorities, but no action was taken against him. So, the refugees drew the attention of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).On August 11, the victim's family members were taken away by Mr. Lo, UNHCR’s protraction officer, from the camp for safe shelter for fear of retaliation and to take action against the culprit, said a relative of the victim.
