Maungdaw, Arakan State: A Rakhine youth and police officer had attacked one Rohingya betel leaves shop –starship- near Maungdaw clock tower on April 17 at about 7:30pm, said an elder from Maungdaw.

The son of police officer Kyaw Aye and traffic police sergeant Tin Aye had attacked the starship betel leaves shop and destroyed the benches with commodities without any reason, the elder said.

The Rakhine youth who used the police power and doing harassment the Rohingya community – rickshaw puller, shopkeeper, betel leaves shop owner and mostly when rural area Rohingya come to the Maungdaw market. The youth loots- cash and goods- from Rohingya people, said a student from the area who didn’t want to mention his name.

“The youth has a reputation for rudeness and arrogance with the power of police as his father is an officer in the town. Also this time is water festival and non-Buddhist community (Rohingya) is not opening their shop except betel shops.”

“The Rohingya youths were advised by the elders not to make any quarrel within the water festival period where Rakhine insulted Rohingya with poems and songs in the water festival period.”

The Rakhine community is trying to do something within this time, so we are carefully watching their step to escape from their trap, said a politician from Maungdaw.

“The Rakhine with authority of Maungdaw, published a magazine – Paccima Zone- on February, 2012 which published mostly anti Rohingya propaganda articles. We need to republish a book or Magazine to response the Paccima Zone magazine through the government publication act.”
