Shafari Dip, Bangladesh: A Rohingya youth died yesterday, after touching a jelly fish, while piling nets in a fishing boat in the Bay of Bengal near Saint Martin Island, Bangladesh, said a fisherman from Shapuri Dip.

The victim was identified as Shukur (25) son of Md. Younus hailing from Shapuri Dip south village of Bangladesh.  He is a Rohingya from Maungdaw Township, who came to Bangladesh three years ago with his family to avoid arrest by Nasaka, Burma’s border security force.

After touching the jelly fish he felt an itching and pain and fell unconscious. He was immediately sent to Teknaf hospital where he died.

The body was brought to Shapuri Dip and buried yesterday.

A local fisherman from Shapuri Dip said, “It is dangerous for fishermen fishing in the Bay of Bengal. The jelly fish is small and white.”

After crossing the Burma-Bangladesh border, Shukur supported his family members by working in a fishing boat, owned by Haji Dawlil from Teknaf, said a close relative of the victim.
