Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazaar: A registered refugee of Kutupalong camp was severely  beaten by local youths and had to be admitted to Cox’s Bazaar government hospital on June 26, said a refugee from the camp.

At around 4 pm that day some refugee youths went to play at the nearby refugee playground. Some local youths watched the game.

For no reason a 12-year old refugee boy was beaten up by a local youth. Another refugee youth Halek protested, said another youth on condition of anonymity.

The local youths started beating up Halek and three other youths who had intervened. Among them, Halek was taken to the locality of the local youths, Monjur Alam (23) and Nurul Islam (25) of Kutuplong area.

The victims were identified as Halek (22), Anisullah (18), Imaran (20), of Kutupalong registered refugee camp.

After taking Halek to their locality, he was severely beaten and tortured by them. Later, the refugees informed the camp police, said a committee member.

The camp police rescued Halek at around 7 pm and brought him to the camp. Halek was admitted to the refugee clinic.

When Halek’s condition became critical, he was sent to Cox’s Bazaar government hospital at 10 pm. He is being treated at the hospital.

Frequently, local people in Kutupalong and Nayapara harass registered refugees and unregistered refugees inside and outside camp, said a refugee elder from the Kutupalong camp.
