Landmine explodes in Burma-Bangladesh border, killing one PDF Print E-mail

Maungdaw, Arakan State:
A land mine exploded on the Burma-Bangladesh border killing one person on January 30, according to border sources.

The explosion occurred between border pillar number 55 to 57, where people believe there were  land mines which the Burmese Army laid for border security  10 years ago, said the source.

On January 30, a group of forest department personnel, was searching for white elephants in the deep forests since New Year. They were passing pillar number 55 to 57. The land mine exploded and Aung Hla Way (45) from the Diena community from Banduhla village was injured. He died while being carried to the nearby heath center of the army, said the source.

The explosion occurred at 14:00 hours and five others suffered minor injuries.

Han Htun, a forest officer, who has expertise about elephants led the group and  forced the villagers to join in with help from Nasaka in the search for white elephants He came from Naypaydaw on a especial operation for white elephants, said a village chairman from Nasaka area 1.
