Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s border security force - Nasaka came up with an unfair judgment recently to two Arakanese Rohingya brothers of Maungdaw Township of Arakan State who put up a case, said a close relative of the victim.

On January 24, two brothers Maulvi Salim Ullah (35), son of Nur Ahmed quarrelled with his elder brother Abdullah over of sharing of inheritance of their landed property. After their father’s death, two brothers and one sister had divided the share of inheritance among them according to Islamic Law.

However, their unmarried younger sister died on December last year. So, her share will be divided by the two brothers again according to the law. But, the elder brother Abdullah forcibly took all the lands of his dead sister without giving any share to his younger brother. Therefore, the younger brother Salim Ullah had an argument with his elder brother, the relative added.

The elder brother Abdullah went to the local Zamatet Nasaka out-posts camp of Maungdaw Township seeking judgment from the Nasaka.  The next day, the younger brother Maulvi Salim was called to the Nasaka camp and detained there.

The following day, on January 26, he was released after paying Kyat 8,000 to the Nasaka officer.

A village elder who is a relative of the two brothers said, “In reality, the elder brother committed the crime and the younger brother is innocent. But, the younger brother is arrested and money was extorted. So it is a significant judgment of Nasaka towards Arakanese Rohingya people.”

A local elder asked “Why do people seek judgment from Nasaka? They are culprits, robbers and persecutors.”
