Over 25 Arakanese Rohingya pushed back to Burma PDF Print E-mail

Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh: Personnel of the Cox’s Bazar Model Police Station arrested 25 Arakanese Rohingyas from different areas of Cox’s Bazar town and pushed them back to Burma, sources said.

The Rohingya were arrested by the police on two days over Saturday and Sunday at the end of January 2010 in raids, sources added.

Fordip Kumar Das, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazaar Model Police Station said that the 25 arrested Arakanese Rohingyas were pushed back on January 31.

The officer also said, in January 2010, around 500 Arakanese Rohingyas were arrested from different areas by authorities.

Similarly on January 26, six Arakanese Rohingyas were arrested by police from Bandarban district and handed over to the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Battalion No. 15, of Naikonchari. Later, they were pushed back by BDR, said a local from Naikonchari.

Today, over 100 Rohingyas were arrested by police from Kutupalong check-post which is established on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf high way. It is not known whether they were pushed back to Burma or sent to jail, said one of the passengers who went to Teknaf from Cox’s Bazar by bus. 

An Arakanese Rohingya said that the Bangladeshi authorities and local people will arrest more Arakanese Rohingyas living in rented houses and along the border areas.
