Sittwe, Burma: A ceremony to mark Burma’s Women's Day organized by Women's Affairs Organization (WAO) of Arakan State was held in U Ottama Hall, Sittwe on July 3, according to an official source.
The Chairperson of WAO Ms Kyi Kyi Wai delivered the keynote address. She said that as part of the burgeoning religious affairs, Arakan State has been preserving ancient pagodas and statues built in 600 BC. All Rakhine women realize the spirit of nationalism. Development of Rakhine culture in changing the traditional costumes can be observed, she said. To hand down 60 methods of traditional hair styles to the new generation, the WAO organized traditional costume fashion shows, hair style shows and traditional dancing contests. The women play a key role in preserving and protecting the cultural inheritance and national character, she added. Rakhine women are ready to accept the concept that all women have a duty to safeguard the land and its nationals. Therefore, the voice of some countries using the media that Arakan State has racial discrimination and lack of religious freedom were only one-sided accusations, Ms Kyi Kyi Wai said. Due to the flourishing tradition and culture and being well placed in the educational sector, the least number of human trafficking cases have occurred in Arakan State, the WAO Chairperson added. In 1992, the Government constituted the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas for National Races and Development Affairs (PBANRDA) for ensuring equitable development for all regions of the nation. In conclusion, the Chairperson said that at present, it is being witnessed that the Ministry of PBANRDA is undertaking the upliftment of living standards of the local people in rural areas and border regions. Finally, the WAO Chairperson and others presented certificates of honour and prizes to winners of the essay contest and 32 outstanding women. Well wishers donated Kyat 1 million to the Chairperson of the WAO and officials. On July 1, the WAO organized a ceremony to plant trees in the Lawkananda Pagoda area as a sign of hailing Burma’s Women's Day.
